Legacy Youth Zone
ccha has now been a founder patron of the Croydon Legacy Youth Zone for the last two years. We are keen to promote the Zone’s extensive list of activities to our younger residents (aged 8-19) which include a variety of sports, music, drama and social events – all in one place, where hot meals are also just £1!
Croydon Youth Zone, known as Legacy, is an independent charity with a purpose-built facility for the boroughs, supporting young people ages 8-19 and up to 25 for those with additional needs. It is London’s third OnSide Youth Zone, located on Whitehorse Road, Selhurst and open 7 days a week. Young people have access to an indoor climbing wall, sports hall, fully equipped gym, training kitchen, music room with a recording studio, arts and crafts room, dance and drama studio and much more.
Membership is £5 a year and then it’s 50p on the door for each visit. There are no extra costs involved.
Ccha’s Chief Executive, Tracy Cullen, talks about why ccha were eager to be involved with Legacy:
“As a local community housing association, we are keen to not only provide affordable housing, but to enhance our residents’ lives through innovative community focused initiatives.”
Our involvement with Legacy means we have been able to offer free holiday club places for our residents, giving your child something fun to do that they wouldn’t normally get a chance to. As well as this, it helps those struggling to afford childcare during school holidays by providing a safe, fun and engaging place for their children to go while they work. Legacy is a great place to learn new skills, meet new people and relax. Children of all abilities are welcome, and the experienced team of staff and volunteers are there to support those attending to experience all the activities offered.
Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 many activities are on hold and the centre is open on a limited basis. From 5th January 2021, Legacy Youth Zone will remain open within lockdown restrictions, but with changes to how young people can attend. During lockdown they will run a mixture of virtual sessions, 121 support & wellbeing calls. The 121 support services in person are invite only, and with strict guidance on bubbles and covid safety procedures to follow when in the building. Please visit the Legacy website for more information and regular updates.
Legacy has been working hard during the pandemic to ensure young people in the community are still able to access support.
They are currently:
- Providing activity packs for young people to take part in online and home activities
- Providing outreach to local areas, ensuring young people are keeping safe
- Providing food parcels
- Delivering 1 to 1 support sessions
If you feel a young person in your household could benefit from the above help, please email us at email@example.com for more information.
